Cinematic Spaces - Influence Maps

Concept one:

“Before us a low and level shore stretched down to a silent sea. As far as the eye could reach
the surface of the water was dotted with countless tiny isles—some of towering, barren, granitic rock—others resplendent in gorgeous trappings of tropical vegetation, myriad starred with the
magnificent splendor of vivid blooms.” - (Found in the Chapter two experts)

The Islands of Hawaii, as well as island from other locations around the world are an obvious chose for this one, as the scene depicted is tropical sounding in nature. The scene has a focused viewpoint looking out into a still ocean, with numerous islands dotted around a sea covered in lush tropical vegetation.

Concept two:

Behind us rose a dark and forbidding wood of giant arborescent ferns intermingled with the commoner types of a primeval tropical forest. Huge creepers depended in great loops from tree to tree, dense under-brush overgrew a tangled mass of fallen trunks and branches. Upon the outer verge we could see the same splendid coloring of countless blossoms that glorified the islands, but within the dense shadows all seemed dark and gloomy as the grave” - (Found in the Chapter two experts)

The idea behind this scene is a huge difference from the first chosen expert piece; this one sounds dark and scary and has an almost gloomy feel to it. This will be a good atmosphere to carry into the final piece, because it shows how varied the landscapes below can be. Images of the amazon rain forest and various jungle’s from around the natural world gave a good sense of how a forest should look and feel. Having it be a very dark place is the way forward for this one, so this means lots of tall tree’s to block out light and a very dense undergrowth to give that untouched look to the forest.

Concept three:

“"We are within the outer wall," said Ja. "It is hollow. Follow me closely."The red man groped ahead a few paces and then began to ascend a primitive ladder similar to that which leads from the ground to the upper stories of his house. We ascended for some forty feet when the interior of the space between the walls commenced to grow lighter and presently we came opposite an opening in the inner wall which gave us an unobstructed view of the entire interior of the temple. The lower floor was an enormous tank of clear water in which numerous hideous Mahars swam lazily up and down. Artificial islands of granite rock dotted this artificial sea, and upon several of them I saw men and women like myself.”  -  (Found in the Chapter eight experts)

This one has an almost cave sounding description, as if the natural land has been turned into a temple for the Mahars use as a place of worship. Studying underground cave systems, as well us natural cave lakes was an obvious choice for this piece. The temple should be large in scale, to give the Mahars enough room to fly around, and also have small granite islands dotted around the large body of water.

  1. Lovely influence maps! Now it will make more sense when we see your thumbnails - and it will make it easier for you to focus your sketching, on say an interior of a cave, or a dense forest.
